People all around the world have enjoyed the classic card game Rummy for decades. It is played with two decks of cards. In this comprehensive guide, we explain the rules of the game and & how to play Rummy.
Understanding the Deck
To start playing rummy, you need two standard decks of cards, each consisting of 52 cards. In addition, there are two Jokers, which can be used as wild cards to complete sets and sequences. The Jokers have no point value in themselves but can be substituted for any card to form a sequence.
The Objective of The Game
The objective of the rummy card game is to arrange your 13 cards in valid sets and sequences. To win the game, you must generate at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence.
The rest of your cards can be any valid sequence or set, including impure sequences, which are formed with the help of one or more wild cards.
Forming Sequences and Sets
What is a Sequence?
A sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, while a set is a group of three or more cards of the same rank but of different suits.
Pure Sequence
To form a pure sequence, you must use only cards from the same suit, arranged in consecutive order. For example, 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ is a pure sequence with three cards.
Impure Sequence
An impure sequence can be formed by using one or more wild cards in a sequence of the same suit. For instance, 6♦ 7♦ Q♠ 9♦ is an impure sequence, with the Queen of Spades used as a wild Joker card replacing the 8♦.
Another example of an impure sequence is 5♠ Q♥ 7♠ 8♠ PJ, where the Queen of Hearts is used as a wild Joker to replace the 6♠, while the Printed Joker (PJ) is used to replace the 9♠.
What is a Set?
To form a set, you must have three or more cards of the same rank but different suits. You can use Wild Jokers to complete a set as well. For example, A♥ A♣ A♦ is a valid set, while 8♦ 8♣ 8♠ 8♥ is a Rummy set, with four 8 cards of different suits. In the second example, the wild card is not used.
Discarding Cards
After picking a card from the closed or open deck, a player must discard one card from their hand, face up on the open deck. The discarded card must not be the same card that was picked from the open deck in that turn. A player can also choose to discard a Joker card if it cannot be used in any possible sequence or set.
Rummy Gameplay on Rummy Titans
In rummy, each player is dealt 13 cards. The game’s wild Joker or Joker card is chosen at random. The remaining cards are placed in two piles, one is a closed deck, where players cannot see the cards and the other is an open deck, formed by the cards discarded by the players.
On your turn, you must draw one card from either the closed or open deck and discard one card from your hand into the open deck. You must then try to form valid sets and sequences with the cards in your hand. As soon as you have the required sets and sequences, you can declare the game by placing your cards face down on the table.
To make a valid declaration, you must have at least two sequences, out of which one must be a pure sequence. The remaining cards in your hand can be any valid set or sequence. The game is won by the first player to declare with a valid hand.
Remember, the objective of rummy is to form valid sequences and sets with the 13 cards in hand. To make a legal declaration, a player must have a pure sequence. With practice and patience, you can master the art of playing rummy and enjoy hours of entertainment with your friends and family.
